The NEK is a very well kept secret: incredible skiing @ Jay Peak and Burke, lakes everywhere including Willoughby &  Memphremagog, gateway to Canada. From Derby up north to St. Johnsbury in the south (north of White River Junction), this gorgeous, tucked away corner of Vermont is pristine. Vermont's cleanest lake, glacial Maidstone has great camping just east of Burke on at the NH border. The NEK has 55 towns and is bordered to the west by the Green Mountains and to the east by the Connecticut River. Adventure abounds, from the spectacular indoor water park at Jay to the Kingdom Trails, a top mountain bike destination in the US. Best of all, you can buy a lot more acreage here than in other more frequented parts of Vermont. And get this. The National Geographic Society named the Northeast Kingdom the most desirable place to visit in the country and ninth most desirable place to visit in the world.^[8]

Visit the Museum of Everyday Life and Peter Schumann's Bread & Puppet Theater for deep country cultural odysseys and don't miss the famous Hill Farmstead brewery. Stop in St. Johnsbury's exquisite bakery, Boule or stay in wonderful Montgomery to ski or mountain bike @ Vermont's northern most ski area, Jay Peak.

Amtrak’s Vermonter runs through Montpelier Junction from Washington DC to St. Albans and the if you're a small engine pilot check out the Edward F. Knapp state airport in Barre. Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport is a 30 minute drive.
