    Stratton, Bromley, Magic & Manchester

Three great ski areas in one valley; Bam!

Southern Vermont has always been a destination of choice for the busy New Yorkers and Bostonians, not to mention others in Connecticut and Massachussetts looking for weekend and vacation getaways without having to spend too much time in the car. This appealing triumverate is close to Manchester too, a major fourth draw.

Seeking intimacy and shorter lift lines? Bromley faces due south to Stratton with a shorter season, gorgeous views across the valley and a Mountain Adventure Park. 9 lifts including a pomma and T-bar and a couple magic carpets for the lil’ ones. 47 Trails across 178 acres and two terrain parks, Bonanza  and Garden. Bike TracksTreetop CourseDisc and Mini Golf.

Magic, where skiing still has its soul, faces west with gorgeous sunsets. Swiss born Hans Thorner, one of the first certified ski instructors in the US, discovered Glebe Mountain ridge lines and steep topography with 1,500 vertical in the 50’s reminding him of his native Swiss Alps.Tree skiing across the mountain. Laid back vibe, sans pretense or pressure. Think Mad River Gen further north in the Mad River Valley. Make some magic here. Both Bromley and Magic offer slopeside or close to the trails satellite condos and homes far more affordable than at Vermont’s bigger ski ares.

Stratton, the supersize me draw with the highest peak in southern Vermont, faces north to Bromley and east with a longer season, usually from Thanksgiving through mid-April. The first resort to allow snowboarding, Stratton has nearly 100 trails & 11 lifts including a gondola. Steep glades and cliffs compliment broad intermediate and beginner terrain. 1,200 snow guns cover 95% of the mountain. The incredibly beautiful upper elevation woods, part of the Green Mountain National Forest are something out of a fairy tale. Check out the wicked terrain parks and revel in the nearly 34,000 people per hour lift capacity. Stratton Village has restaurants, shops, tent sales, live music and yoga.

Manchester is the biggie, west of the ski areas with the amazing Orvis Fly Fishing and Sports retail headquarters. If you are into or would like to master fly fishing, this is the place with lessons on and off site. The Battenkill River has a prominent trout population and is a mecca for those who tie.

Feeling gilded? Hit Manchester Designer Outlets for Ralph Lauren and other high end retailers you can’t find anywhere else in Vermont, a testament to the upper crust tourists and affluent second homeowners. Green and Taconic mountain views set the tone. Route 11 leading up to Bromley is lined with so many eateries, it’s restaurant row. All this within a short drive to Magic and Stratton too, Manchester is just three and a quarter hours from Boston and four from New York City.

Dorset is just north of Manchester, quintessential rural New England. Both towns offer myriad dining, lodging and shopping options as well as well established wedding venues. The summers are just as wonderful as the ski season: these are exceptionally year-round destinations. Catch a production at the Dorset Players. Swim at dramatic Hamilton Falls in Jamaica. JJ Hapgood in Peru is a must and make the Peru Fair for heartful Vermont crafts and edibles in late September. Try the Crooked Ram or Thai Basil in Manchester, The Wild Boar Tavern @ Bromley, the Black Line Tavern @ Magic and the Fire Tower at Stratton.
